PORTLAND, Ore. – Oct. 25, 2012 – Omission Beer, the first craft beer brand in the U.S. focused exclusively on brewing great-tasting beers with traditional beer ingredients – including malted barley – that are specially crafted to remove gluten, is now widely available in Washington D.C.. Retailers carrying Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale can be found using the brewery’s beer finder, located at www.findomissionbeer.com.

Brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., gluten levels in every batch of Omission beer are measured by the brewery and an independent lab using the R5 Competitive ELISA test. This test ensures that the beer measures well below the Codex gluten-free standard of 20ppm or less. To date, gluten levels in every batch of Omission beer have been undetectable at a threshold of less than 10ppm, the lowest detectable gluten level for fermented beverages tested using this method. Test results for every batch of Omission beer are available to consumers at: www.omissiontests.com.

“Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale are two great-tasting craft beers, and we’re eager to share them with the Washington D.C. community,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO. “Omission Beer exemplifies the creativity and innovation of craft brewing. As a diagnosed celiac of 12 years, I could not be more excited to share these beers with the gluten-free and beer communities, especially as we continue to hear enthusiastic and positive stories from fans who wouldn’t otherwise be able to enjoy great-tasting craft beers.”

In response to consumer feedback, the brewery launched an online forum where fans can share stories about their experiences drinking Omission beer. These experiences, dubbed “O” Moments, can be shared at www.o-moments.com.

Omission Beer was released this spring by Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), but was initially only available in Oregon. Following the beer’s success in the state and requests received from across the country, the brewery initiated a phased national rollout.

Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale

“Omission Beer offers two great-tasting craft beers for people who may not have been able to fully enjoy craft beers brewed with malted barley,” said Joe Casey, brewmaster. “Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale are approachable beers and true expressions of their respective styles. With gluten sensitivities on the rise, these are great beers to have on hand when you want to ensure you have a craft beer option for anyone of legal drinking age to enjoy.”

Omission Lager is a refreshing and crisp beer, brewed in the traditional lager style. Perfect for a variety of occasions, Omission Lager’s aromatic hop profile offers a unique, easy-drinking beer for those looking for a lighter and approachable beer style. Bold and hoppy, Omission Pale Ale is a hop-forward American pale ale, brewed to showcase the Cascade hop profile. Amber in color, Omission Pale Ale’s floral aroma is complemented by a caramel malt body, making for a delicious craft beer.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Oct. 12, 2012 – Omission Beer, the first craft beer brand in the U.S. focused exclusively on brewing great-tasting beers with traditional beer ingredients – including malted barley – that are specially crafted to remove gluten, is now widely available in Denver.

“Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale are two great-tasting craft beers, and we’re eager to share them with the Denver community,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO.

– Oct. 1, 2012 – Omission Beer is celebrating National Celiac Awareness Month this October with two great-tasting craft beers that everyone of legal drinking age can enjoy. Omission beer is the first craft beer brand in the U.S. focused exclusively on brewing great-tasting beers with traditional beer ingredients—including malted barley—specially crafted to remove gluten. Introduced in late March by Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), Omission Pale Ale and Omission Lager are now available nationwide.

“Omission beers are a reflection of the creativity and determination of our brewers to create flavorful craft beers that everyone of age can enjoy,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO of CBA and a 12-year celiac. “We’re happy to announce that Omission beers are available nationwide in time to honor October as National Celiac Awareness Month and look forward to sharing these great-tasting beers with those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to enjoy craft beer brewed with malted barley.”

Omission Beer has launched a Beer Finder at www.findomissionbeer.com to help beer drinkers and gluten-intolerant consumers locate retailers, restaurants and bars carrying Omission beers in markets across the country.

Omission is also celebrating National Celiac Awareness Month by asking fans to share stories about their first experiences drinking Omission beer on the brand’s website. Omission recently launched an online forum to showcase these first experiences, which have been dubbed “O” Moments, after receiving daily feedback from many fans that, until the introduction of Omission Beer, were unable to enjoy beers brewed with malted barley. Omission fans are encouraged to share their “O” Moments at www.o-moments.com or on the brand’s Facebook page at facebook.com/omissionbeer.

“Sharing a beer with family and friends is one of life’s simple joys, and it’s been wonderful to bring that experience to many of those who have had to sit on the sidelines,” said Joe Casey, brewmaster. “With Omission Beer, my wife, who has celiac, and countless others can now take part in those great beer experiences.”

Brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., gluten in Omission beer is removed using a unique brewing program developed by the brewery. Gluten levels in every batch of Omission beer are measured by the brewery and an independent lab using the R5 Competitive ELISA gluten test to ensure that the beer measures well below the Codex gluten free standard of 20ppm or less. This test is the best test available to measure gluten levels in fermented beverages. Test results for every batch of Omission beer are available to consumers at: www.omissiontests.com. Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale are available in 12-ounce bottles at retailers, restaurants and bars throughout the U.S.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Oct. 1, 2012 – Omission Beer, the first craft beer brand in the U.S. focused exclusively on brewing great-tasting beers with traditional beer ingredients – including malted barley – that are specially crafted to remove gluten, is now widely available in the Puget Sound. Retailers carrying Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale can be found using the brewery’s beer finder, located at www.findomissionbeer.com

Test results for every batch of Omission beer are available to consumers at: www.omissiontests.com

“Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale are two great-tasting craft beers, and we’re eager to share them with the Seattle community,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO. “Omission Beer exemplifies the creativity and innovation of craft brewing. As a diagnosed celiac of 12 years, I could not be more excited to share these beers with the gluten-free and beer communities, especially as we continue to hear enthusiastic and positive stories from fans who wouldn’t otherwise be able to enjoy great-tasting craft beers.

(May 16, 2012) – On Wednesday, May 16 at 9:30 a.m., Mayor Sam Adams declared it to be Gluten-Free Beer Day in Portland, Ore., and every May 16 henceforth. In an official ceremony held at City Hall, Adams delivered the following proclamation to supporters and brewers of gluten-free beer, including Omission Beer, Deschutes Brewery and Harvester Brewing. Following is an abbreviated proclamation:

Whereas, May marks the annual Celiac Awareness Month, recognized by most celiac organizations and research centers across the country and throughout the world;

Celiac disease is one of the most common chronic diseases in Western countries;

According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, more than 3 million Americans have celiac disease and must monitor gluten intake, equating to 1 in 133 Americans;

More than 95% of Celiacs are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions;

A 100% gluten-free diet is the only existing treatment for celiac disease today as there are no pharmaceutical cures;

Portland, Ore., home to nearly 50 craft breweries, where the people of Portland know and appreciate great craft beers, is leading the effort to create gluten-free beer for those affected with gluten sensitivities;

The City of Portland acknowledges and applauds the efforts to declare this day in celebration of local breweries that are doing their part to bring awareness to a disease that affects many, and providing beer products specially crafted to be gluten-free for all to enjoy;

Now, therefore, I, Sam Adams, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby proclaim May 16, 2012 to be Gluten-Free Beer Day in Portland, and encourage all residents to observe this day.

About Omission Beer

Omission Beer is a new brand of gluten-free craft beers, available only in Oregon. Brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., Omission is the first craft beer brand in the United States focused exclusively on brewing great tasting craft beers with traditional beer ingredients, including malted barley, that are specially crafted to be gluten-free. Each batch of Omission Beer is tested using the R5 Competitive ELISA test, to ensure that every batch contains well-below the international standard for gluten-free of 20 ppm gluten. Drinking is believing.

About Deschutes Brewery

Deschutes Brewery jumped into the gluten-free brewing scene back in 2007 and always has a gluten-free beer on tap at both its Bend and Portland pubs. After brewing 48 different batches, the goal remains to brew a great beer that is gluten-free, rather than brewing a great gluten-free beer. Although a silver and a bronze medal from the Great American Beer Festival hang on the pub walls from their process, Deschutes Brewery continues to work with different styles to serve the gluten-free world.

About Harvester Brewing
Harvester Brewing is the nation’s only dedicated gluten-free craft brewery, founded in 2011 in Portland, Ore. Harvester’s northwest-style ales are handcrafted from Willamette Valley chestnuts, sorghum, certified gluten-free oats, pure cane sugar and Willamette Valley hops. Harvester’s beers are made without barley, wheat, rye, corn, or dyes. Harvester Brewing’s facility is entirely gluten-free, no gluten containing items are allowed on the premises.

PORTLAND, Ore. – May 2, 2012 – Omission Beer, introduced by Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) in March, is sharing additional details about the brewing program that allows Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale to be brewed using traditional ingredients, like malted barley, but without the gluten-levels associated with other malted barley-based beers. Every batch of gluten-free Omission beer, which is only available in Oregon, is brewed following the multi-stage program developed by the brewery, and every batch is tested by an independent lab to ensure that it contains gluten levels well below the international gluten-free standard of 20ppm or less. This standard is defined by the United Nations Food & Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organization.

Brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., Omission beers have turned heads in the craft beer industry, celiac community and beyond. Committed to educating consumers about the beers brewed under the Omission brand, CBA is offering greater insight into the proprietary brewing process behind the beers that everyone of legal drinking age can enjoy.

“We’ve had a great response to our new line of Omission beers and, naturally, a lot of questions about our approach,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO of CBA. “After a significant investment in research, testing and development over the past two years, we’ve established an entire brewing program focused on managing gluten in the brewing process from start to finish.”

The Omission brewing program includes additional steps and requires additional care, beyond standard brewing practices and protocols, to ensure that beer brewed with malted barley meets strict gluten standards set forth by the brewery:

Ingredient and style selection: Omission beers are brewed with low-protein barley. Style choices are based, in part, on ability to reliably reduce gluten-levels to well below strict standards.

Sanitization: All brewing equipment downstream from fermentation is freshly cleaned and sanitized for every batch of Omission beer. Unlike the process used in brewing other beers, where hot water rinse may be sufficient, equipment is cleaned and sanitized before Omission beers are brewed to avoid risk of cross contamination.

Brewers Clarex™: Brewers Clarex™, an enzyme developed by DSM Food Specialties and traditionally used to prevent chill-haze in beers, is added during the brewing process. The enzyme, which has been used by craft brewers around the world as a clarifying agent since it was introduced more than five years ago, works to break down proteins, including gluten, in the beer.

Testing: Every batch of Omission beer is tested for gluten by two independent labs using the R5 Competitive ELISA. Omission beer’s primary lab partner is Eurofins Scientific, the world leader in food and pharmaceutical products testing. Every batch of Omission beer is also tested by the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program (FARRP) at the University of Nebraska. Tests are also conducted internally by the brewery at various stages in the brewing and packaging processes; within a month, Omission beers will be tested internally at the brewery using the R5 Competitive ELISA as well. No bottles of Omission are released to consumers until all results are reviewed and verified to contain gluten levels well below the international gluten-free standard of 20ppm or less.

Packaging: To further protect the integrity of the beers, Omission beers are only sold in bottles and never available on draught, where risk of cross contamination from tap lines or server error could threaten consumer safety.

Consumer Education: CBA is committed to sharing information about the beers, brewing processes and testing so consumers can make a confident choice when purchasing and drinking Omission beer.
“Developing a brewing program that would allow us to brew great tasting craft beer brewed with malted barley, but happens to be gluten-free, has been a personal mission of mine for the last several years,” said Joe Casey, brewmaster at Widmer Brothers Brewing. “With the Omission program, we’re able to consistently brew beer with gluten levels well below the international gluten-free standard.”

PORTLAND, Ore. – May 1, 2012 – May is widely recognized as National Celiac Disease Awareness Month and the brewers of gluten-free Omission Beer are celebrating by donating dollars to the cause. During the month of May, Omission will contribute a portion of the proceeds from all 6-pack and case sales purchased in the Widmer Brothers retail store and bottles purchased in the Gasthaus Pub, to support research efforts at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure. From May 1-31, Omission will offer two ways for craft beer-loving consumers to help this important work:

Sales at the Widmer Brothers retail store. For the first time, Omission Beers will be available for purchase at the Widmer Brothers retail store. For every six-pack sold, Omission will contribute $1 to the cause.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac Disease is estimated to affect approximately one in 133 Americans. Celiac Disease is a lifelong inherited autoimmune condition affecting children and adults. When people with Celiac Disease eat foods that contain gluten, it creates an immune-mediated toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed.

Gluten-Free Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale:

Omission Lager is a refreshing and crisp beer, brewed in the traditional lager style. Perfect for a variety of beer drinking occasions, Omission Lager’s aromatic hop profile offers a unique, easy-drinking gluten-free beer for those looking for a lighter and approachable beer style. Bold and hoppy, Omission Pale Ale is a hop-forward American Pale Ale, brewed to showcases the Cascade hop profile. Amber in color, Omission Pale Ale’s floral aroma is complemented by caramel malt body, making for a delicious gluten-free craft beer.

Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale have a suggested retail price of $9.99 per six-pack and are now available in 12-ounce bottles at the Widmer Brothers Gasthaus Pub, and at retailers and bars throughout Oregon.

Gluten-Free, See Your Bottle’s Test Results Online

Each batch of Omission Beer is tested by an independent lab, Eurofins Scientific, the world leader in food and pharmaceutical products testing, to ensure that all Omission beers contain well below the international gluten-free standard of 20 ppm of gluten. Gluten levels in Omission beers are tested using the R5 competitive ELISA test. Beer is not released to consumers until test results are received and after an extended quality assurance hold.

Each bottle of Omission beer is stamped with a date code indicating when it was brewed and bottled. Consumers are encouraged to visit www.OmissionTests.com, where they can enter the code from their bottle and view their beer’s R5 competitive ELISA test results.

Brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., Omission beers are brewed using a proprietary brewing process to reduce the gluten levels to well below the widely accepted international gluten-free standard of 20 parts per million (ppm) for food and beverages. The international gluten-free standard was set forth by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which was created in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

“After announcing the Omission Beer brand last week, we’re looking forward to sharing our first two gluten-free craft beers with the craft beer and gluten-free communities in Oregon,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO. “Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale really push the boundaries of what’s possible, and we’re thrilled to offer two great craft beers that anyone of legal drinking age can enjoy.”

“Omission Lager and Omission Pale Ale are great examples of their respective styles,” said Joe Casey, Widmer Brothers brewmaster. “The lager is brewed in the traditional lager style and the pale ale is a true American style pale. We’re excited that these two beers will allow more people to enjoy a great craft beer experience.”

PORTLAND, Ore. – March 26, 2012 – This spring, Craft Brew Alliance will launch Omission Beer, the first craft beer brand in the United States focused exclusively on brewing great-tasting craft beers with traditional beer ingredients, including malted barley, that are specially crafted to be gluten-free. Omission beers are brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., which uses a proprietary brewing process to reduce the gluten levels to well below the widely accepted international gluten-free standard of 20 parts per million (ppm) for food and beverages. Omission Beer is expected to release the first beers in its portfolio, which will be available only in Oregon, on April 2.

“Developing great-tasting, authentic craft beers that happen to be gluten-free was a personal mission for our brewmaster and me, and it’s a mission that our team really got behind. The launch of Omission Beer is a game changer for celiacs and the craft beer community,” said Terry Michaelson, CEO of Craft Brew Alliance. “As a 12-year celiac and longtime craft beer enthusiast, I’m thrilled to introduce delicious craft beers that can be enjoyed equally by those who are affected by gluten sensitivities and those who are not.”

Unlike many other gluten-free beers currently available, Omission beers are not brewed with sorghum, rice, tapioca, buckwheat or quinoa; they are brewed using traditional beer ingredients: malted barley, hops, water and yeast.

“Omission Beer has been a work in progress for the last six years,” said Joe Casey, brewmaster at Widmer Brothers Brewing. “My wife was diagnosed as a celiac in 2006, and since then, we’ve made it our mission to brew a great-tasting craft beer using traditional beer ingredients that everyone of legal drinking age could enjoy. After years of hard work, mission accomplished.”

Gluten-Free Guarantee, Every Batch Tested:

Each batch of Omission Beer is tested by an independent lab to ensure that all Omission beers contain well below 20 ppm of gluten. Gluten levels in Omission beers are tested using the R5 competitive ELISA test. Beer will not be released to consumers until test results are received and after an extended quality assurance hold.
